Facility Auditor - Sport

The Sports Facility Auditor - Sport is a collaborative initiative that partners with major sporting organisations to enhance facility planning and management across Australia. Working alongside AFL, Cricket Australia, Football Australia, Netball Victoria, Netball New South Wales, Netball Queensland, and Golf Australia, the SFA program aims to improve the quality and accessibility of sports facilities nationwide. 

This collaboration brings together insights and expertise from the sport, ensuring that the audit reflects the specific needs and standards of each particular sport. By conducting comprehensive facility assessments, SFA helps identify areas for improvement, prioritise investments, and develop strategies for sustainable facility management. 

The program utilises data-driven methodologies to evaluate existing infrastructure, gauge condition using sport specific ratings, and assess compliance with accessibility and environmental standards. It also promotes stakeholder and land-owner engagement, ensuring that facilities are collaboratively planned to meet the needs of diverse users. 

Using outcomes from SFA - Sport, partner organisations can make informed decisions regarding facility upgrades, maintenance, and new developments. Program Functions

Compliance

Evaluates infrastructure to ensure it meets regulatory and industry standards, sport and recreation facility guidelines and compliance for facility and amenity provision, size, optimal placement and layout, functionality and safety.

Environment

Identify if energy efficient systems, appliances and materials are used (including LED lighting), if water saving and re-use technologies (for buildings and fields of play) are in place and renewable energy is being implemented (e.g solar panels, battery storage).  

Condition

Assess facilities using universal and IPWEA adopted rating scales to determine overall condition of playing areas, site amenities and facilities.  Identify factors that may contribute to condition, including usage, damage and defects, maintenance regimes and identify capital renewal requirements.

Capacity

Collects data on field usage, including hours, activities, and participant numbers for peak usage insights.  Integration with player, membership and competition fixturing systems supports facility capacity analysis, and ensures facilities align with sport and user needs and guide overall network planning and resource allocation.

Inclusivity

Understand how universal design principles have been incorporated into each facility to ensure accessibility for all users, regardless of gender or ability.  Ensure venues are accessible, car parking and pathways are adequate, signage is clear and visible and gender inclusivity is provided in all toilet and change room environments. 

Investment

Identifies infrastructure needs and upgrades based on usage data and condition ratings.  Historical and future capital projects data can be stored, enabling the development of long-term investment strategies and exploring of partnership funding options to support facility development and enhancements.
