Facility Development Guidelines

The key to developing successful facility guidelines is to understand by who and how they will be used.  Working with those who plan, design, deliver and operate sports facilities is essential to ensuring facility guidelines are clear and achievable.  We have delivered preferred facility guidelines for some of the country’s leading sports including the AFL and Cricket Australia.

Some of our projects:

AFL Preferred Facility Guidelines (2024)

The AFL Preferred Facility Guidelines provide a framework for developing modern, inclusive football facilities that cater to the evolving needs of Australian Rules football communities. The guidelines prioritize gender-neutral change rooms and unisex amenities, ensuring facilities support both male and female participation.

Additionally, a strong focus is placed on safe, high-quality playing surfaces, alongside improved lighting to support training and games at any time. Sustainability is central, with the guidelines promoting energy-efficient lighting, water conservation, and environmentally friendly materials.

These facilities are designed not only to enhance the football experience but also to serve as multi-functional community hubs.

By fostering collaboration between councils, clubs, and local stakeholders, the guidelines aim to future-proof venues, encouraging participation growth and making spaces accessible and welcoming to all. The AFL's vision is to ensure that facilities meet the needs of players, spectators, and local communities for years to come.

Cricket Australia Community Facility Guidelines (2023)

The Cricket Australia Community Facility Guidelines offer a clear framework for creating inclusive, accessible, and sustainable cricket facilities. These guidelines focus on ensuring that venues cater to all genders, abilities, and age groups through gender-neutral change rooms, adaptable amenities, and universally accessible spaces.

They also highlight the importance of high-quality, safe playing surfaces, whether natural or synthetic, to ensure optimal player performance and safety. Sustainability is a key principle, with recommendations for energy-efficient lighting, water-saving technologies, and the use of environmentally friendly materials.

Additionally, the guidelines encourage collaboration with local councils, clubs, and stakeholders to create multi-use community hubs that promote cricket participation while supporting broader community needs.

By integrating flexible spaces, these facilities can host a range of activities beyond sport, enhancing their value to the community. The *Cricket Australia Community Facility Guidelines aim to ensure that facilities meet modern standards, support participation growth, and remain accessible and welcoming to all users, fostering a stronger and more connected community.

Sport and Recreation Victoria - Female Friendly Sport Infrastructure Guidelines

The Female Friendly Sport Infrastructure Guidelines have been developed to provide information and advice to community sport and recreation clubs, governing sport bodies, recreation facility management organisations, as well as local government bodies, on how to deliver more gender equitable environments.

The information assists community sport and recreation clubs, governing sport bodies, recreation facility management organisations, as well as local government bodies. 3 enablers were identified at the core ingredients to drive change - maximising use, facility planning and design and policy that drives change.
